Quick answer

Start with the most diagnostic clue.

Learn what the Rain Bird ESP-ME3 “NO AC” message means and the safe first checks for breaker, outlet, GFCI protection, and power connections.

On this page

“NO AC” means the ESP-ME3 is not detecting AC power. Start by checking the controller’s circuit breaker, outlet or power connection, and any GFCI protection. This message points to a power-supply issue, so valve troubleshooting and programming changes are not the first checks.

What “NO AC” Means on an ESP-ME3

With a 9-volt battery installed, the ESP-ME3 displays “NO AC” when AC power is not present. The battery can keep the display and stored programs available during an AC-power loss, but the irrigation system will not run.

Important: A controller that still appears active on battery power is not confirmation that it has AC power available for irrigation.

First Checks: Breaker, Outlet, and GFCI

  1. Check the circuit breaker that supplies the irrigation controller.
  2. Confirm that a plug-in controller is connected to a working outlet, or that the controller is properly connected to its power source.
  3. If the controller uses a GFCI receptacle - or an outlet protected by a GFCI - check for outlet power or reset the circuit breaker as directed for that circuit.

These are Rain Bird’s listed checks for the “NO AC” message. Address the AC-power issue before moving on to sprinkler zones, valves, or schedule settings.

Confirm the Correct Power Supply

For a domestic plug-in installation, Rain Bird specifies a nearby 120 VAC outlet. The domestic ESP-ME3 specification is 120 VAC, plus or minus 10%, at 60 Hz.

If the controller is not connected to the intended power source, restore the proper connection before further troubleshooting.

If Your Controller Is Direct-Wired

Turn off the power supply before connecting or working on direct-wired power conductors. For an outdoor direct-wired installation, Rain Bird specifies the transformer connections as hot to black, neutral to white, and ground to green.

Rain Bird also specifies that the ground wire must be connected for electrical-surge protection and that permanently mounted conduit must be used for main-voltage wiring to the controller. If you are not equipped to safely verify a direct-wired installation, leave mains-wiring work to a qualified electrician.

Should You Reset the Controller?

Rain Bird documents reset or a two-minute unplug-and-replug procedure for a blank, frozen, or otherwise abnormal display. It is not the listed first response to a specific “NO AC” message. Check the breaker, outlet or power connection, and GFCI protection first.
